Are you looking for a problem based low floor high ceiling task to help your 7th graders derive the volume formulas for prisms and pyramids? This discovery learning task is a great way to to let students discover and derive the formula for the volume of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and pyramids.

This resource will make your life easier because it is an easy, no prep printable resource, including two worksheets and a video demonstration to derive the formula for pyramids. On part 1, students will use the area of the base of a shape and multiply by the height of the prism to find the volume of a prism. On part 2, students will watch a video demonstration showing that a square pyramid fills up a cube, of the same size height and base, exactly 3 times and use this relationship to derive the formula.
