7th graders LOVE a learning character…meet Chef Dan! He is a “friend” that comes to visit our math class. He has lots of problems and needs help from 7th grade mathematicians. Students will engage in these problem based learning tasks because Chef Dan is whoever they imagine up in their minds. He is a name on a worksheet that students love seeing again and again, kind of like a beloved character from a book or show, except he’s a beloved character from math class. Every time I say “We have a friend visiting today that will help us investigate…”, they cheer and say: “Is it Chef Dan?!” OR “Not Chef Dan again!!” Either way they have a passionate reaction, which engages them in the task!! It is my favorite thing to watch!!
These low floor high ceiling tasks make it easier for you to focus on student learning since you won’t need to spend hours trying to create a task on your own. The low floor high ceiling aspect makes it accessible to all students, which naturally differentiates for different levels since the low floor means anyone can get started and the high ceiling means students can extend to it any level they are able to!
This is a growing bundle that will include a “Chef Dan” task for every unit/discipline in 7th grade math.

You can use these tasks to introduce a topic. Let students explore and investigate a concept on their own and in small groups rather than lecture them and hope that they understand. Students will connect with the tasks and connect with the math. They will discover the concepts on their own, and through class discussion you will be able to solidify the skills and concepts they needed to gain from the task.
