We can all feel it…the end of the school is year is so close, yet so far away at the same time!! Hang in there friends! Our students are ready for a break and we teachers are ready for a break too! I’m here to help you and your middle school math students finish the school year strong! Here are 3 end of year math review activities to help you manage the classroom and keep your students engaged in math until the end of the school year!!
BINGO REVIEW GAME
Have you every wondered how you can get your students to ask for one more problem, even after the bell rings?! That little high you feel when you realize you’ve got 5 in a row…bingo…everyone wants a bingo!! Your 7th graders will love reviewing with bingo, even if it means they have to solve math problems! My bingo game reviews various 7th grade math topics, including rational number operations, equivalent expressions, solving equations, proportional relationships, geometry measurements, probability, and statistics! You can use this activity to review for end of year testing, or an end of level activity to help your students prepare for 8th grade.
Here’s what I do: print out the task cards and cut them apart. Students create their own bingo board by choosing 24 of the possible answers and writing them anywhere on their bingo board. It’s super easy to prepare since students are doing the work to make the bingo board! I instruct students that they have to solve the problem and show their work in the space provided on their paper. I tell my sweet students that in order to get a bingo, they also have to have work shown on their paper. 🙂 I mix up the task cards and display the questions one at a time under my document camera. I walk around as students are working to make sure they understand and assist when needed. I don’t tell students the answer after each problem because I want them to do the work and then find their answer on the bingo board. I keep track of which problems we’ve done so that if a student gets a bingo, I can check to see if they’ve gotten all of the problems correct. I personally don’t love giving out candy in the classroom, but bingo is one of the few occasions where I will give out a piece of candy if students get a bingo. Overall, it makes for a super fun day and I love how engaged my students get with bingo!
PROBLEM PROMENADE
It’s May and students are getting antsy! This activity will give students the chance to get out of their seats and move around the room. I call this activity a “problem promenade” because they will move from station to station solving math problems. Students can complete this activity in pairs or individually.
Here’s what I do: post the task cards around the room and have students solve the problems on the student answer sheet. I move around the room too and answer questions when students get stumped. This 7th grade activity reviews essential standards including rational number operations, equivalent expressions, solving equations and inequalities, and proportional relationships. Since this activity includes 30 task cards, you could also try out one of my other favorite ideas for task cards: “Quiz, Quiz, Trade” In this activity, I give every student a task card and they have to pair up with another student, quiz each other, then trade cards and quiz another student.
MOVIE REVIEW WORKSHEET
Do you need a chill review day at the end of the year? You can relax a little while your students stay engaged with a movie themed math review worksheet. It’s as easy as it sounds, print the worksheet and watch the movie! This could also work great for a sub plan if you need a last minute plan. And if you can’t show a movie, then play the soundtrack while they work!
This movie review worksheet has 15 movie themed questions (about our favorite island princess) and students will enjoy solving problems while watching a movie.
